States and corporations are rapidly increasing their capacities for surveillance and social control through using new digital technologies, but they have not been the only ones using these technologies to their advantage. Recently, there has also been an explosion of resistance to state repression through informal networks and campaigns such as Anonymous and LulzSec. Despite its successes, this fight has not been without its setbacks, and it is important for us to support those who have been imprisoned for their alleged participation in these actions.
Also, because computers have become, for better or worse, one of the most important tools at the disposal of activists worldwide, it is important to know the ways that they can be used to hurt us. We will also be discussing tools that we can use in order to defend ourselves against surveillance, how to create a culture that values and promotes a consciousness of tech security, and how struggles to defend our own information – or to fight capitalism on the digital front – can tie into other struggles.
Anarchist Tech Support is a working group of QPIRG Concordia.
