Community Economic Development in Parc-Ex

The Jobra Centre is a migrant-run anti-poverty organization based in the Parc-Ex neighborhood of Montreal. They are working on starting up a cooperative laundry mat on Birnam Street under the principles of Community Economic Development (CED) with the goal of empowering migrants, especially women, living in Parc-Ex.

 

The Jobra Centre is seeking research on the possibilities for CED projects in Parc-Ex, as well as research looking at past examples of such projects.

Exposing the Textile Industry in Montreal

This project would take place in the context of an ongoing campaign of the Immigrant Workers Centre (IWC) to support the laid-off workers of L’amour, a textile company in Montreal. During the current economic crisis, workers in the textile industry are being hit hard by massive lay-offs. This research would assist the IWC in understanding the textile industry in order to better defend immigrant workers against such attacks.
