Projects related to Environmental justice

Best Before:Waste, Safety and the Food Industry

Organization:
Midnight Kitchen

Project description:  The Midnight Kitchen is looking for someone to work on a research project about food safety and expiration dates found on food packaging. Ideally, this project would look into the market incentives behind expiration date labeling in comparison with the actual interval within which food is safe for consumption. The research could take nutritional perspective or focus more on political aspects (policy, historical trends, etc).

We're interested in this project in two ways. First, we'd like to use
this information in a larger political project on food waste. We might
turn some of this information into political posters in our serving
space, or into a zine/pamphlet to be distributed at servings. Second,
since MK uses donated surplus food that isn't always in prime
condition, it would be good to have more research on food safety.

McGill Food Systems Project

Organization:
McGill Food Systems Project

The McGill Food Systems Project (MFSP) is a collaborative initiative between students, McGill Food and Dining Services, and the McGill Office of Sustainability, which utilizes student research to assess and improve the sustainability of the food systems at McGill.  Currently, we are developing a database of the food sourcing practices with the intention of having this database serve as a baseline against which to compare the feasibility of more sustainable alternatives. During the fall 2009 semester we will be hosting events to engage all students, administrators and staff in the ongoing improvements to our food systems at McGill.

Organization:
Sustainable Development Association (SDC-CDD)

The Sustainable Development Corporation du developpement durable SDC-CDD is a Tiohtiake (greater Montreal region) Canadian Non-Profit since 1994 working in a participatory inter-disciplinary way with students, citizens, organizations, business, institutions & governments on ecological-economic design.

Project Description:
In 2008, SDC-CDD completed a Feasibility Study reviewing engineering and architectural features, as well as resident health & community factors, for the conversion of the Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue 1944 Municipal Water Tower into an ecological building for affordable housing and research. This project was financed by the Canadian Mortgage & Housing Corporation (CMHC) SEED program. The mayor of Ste-Anne has asked us to continue preparations for a next stage. We are presently refining the designs as well as arranging financing, developers & builders. Our goal in Ste-Anne & 3 other sites across Tiohtiake is to create inclusive Ecological Co-housing communities in tradition of the Longhouse (Place of the Extended Rafters).

First Nation placename mapping for Tiohtiake (Greater Montreal region) & across Quebec

Organization:
Sustainable Development Association (SDC-CDD)

Project Description:
The student will perform First Nation placename mapping across Quebec in various regions on a Geographic Information System (GIS) software platform. This research will contribute to a mapping project flowing since 1994 from Eco-Montreal Tiohtiake Green Mapping and Tsi Tetsionitiotiakon Sustainability Rooted in Heritage. Placename mapping has been in process since 1999, with hundreds of students and Kanien'keh citizens. Placenames hold a key to understanding sustainable economy and ecology, the tens of thousands of years of heritage of each place in our region, and bring us understanding of the nature of this place and people.

Description of final product: Students will be working on teams under the direction of First Nations & organizing committees in regional networks across Quebec to research, compile & express heritage data given the local and national objectives of First Nation organizers. First Nations will determine the final use of the data collected. Ethical permissions must be achieved with local First Nation organizing committees. Kahnawake (across the Mercier bridge) has GIS to connect the Band Council with other community organizations having access.
