Update: Jaggi Singh Released! QPIRG Concordia is happy to announce that Jaggi Singh has been released from prison in Toronto and has returned to work as of Wednesday, July 14th. We are all overjoyed to have him back and want to thank everyone in our community and networks for their kindness and support during this time.
Une lettre ouverte du Conseil d'administration du GRIP-Concordia en appui à notre employé et ami Jaggi Singh Le lundi 5 juillet dernier, le Groupe de recherche en intérêt public (GRIP) de l'Université Concordia a reçu un courriel de la part de notre Coordonnateur des groupes de travail et de la programmation Jaggi Singh nous informant de son intention de se rendre à la police tôt mardi matin, conformément à un mandat d'arrêt émis contre lui en lien avec la résistance contre le sommet du G20 à Toronto. Plusieurs d'entre nous avaient les larmes aux yeux en recevant ce courriel, qui nous apprenait que notre bien-aimé employé, ami et membre infatigable de notre communauté nous serait enlevé pour une période de temps indéterminée. Le GRIP-Concordia travaille à tisser des liens entre la population étudiante et la communauté montréalaise plus large, tout en faisant la promotion de la justice sociale et environnementale. Jaggi occupe officiellement le poste de Coordonnateur des groupes de travail et de la programmation au GRIP-Concordia depuis août 2008. Officieusement, on pourrait dire qu'il travaille au GRIP depuis beaucoup plus longtemps. En effet, cela fait plusieurs années que Jaggi utilise régulièrement notre espace, y fait du bénévolat et s'implique dans nos groupes de travail. Dès qu'il a commencé en tant que coordonnateur, il s'est lancé avec enthousiasme dans ses tâches. Il a organisé d'innombrables événements très réussis pour le compte du GRIP et a oeuvré sans relâche pour rendre plus accessible le militantisme pour la justice sociale et environnementale. Avec ses collègues Tasha et Ashley, Jaggi a grandement contribué au rayonnement du GRIP-Concordia, à sa visibilité et à son accessibilité, tant à Concordia qu'à l'extérieur des murs de l'université. An open letter from the QPIRG Concordia Board in support of our employee and friend Jaggi Singh On Monday, July 5th, the QPIRG Concordia Board of Directors received an email from our Working Groups and Programming Coordinator Jaggi Singh informing us that he was planning to turn himself in early Tuesday morning in compliance with a warrant that had been put out for him in relation to the resistance to the G20 summit in Toronto. The shock of receiving this email brought many of us to tears, learning that one of our valued employees, our close friend, and a tirelessly hard-working member of our community would be taken from us for an undetermined amount of time. The Quebec Public Interest Research Group (QPIRG) at Concordia University works to create links between students and the broader Montreal communities, encouraging social and environmental justice on and off campus. Jaggi has been working as the Working Groups and Programming Coordinator of QPIRG Concordia since August 2008, though one could easily assume it has been much longer than that, as he has been a regular space-user, volunteer, and eager working group member for many years prior. As soon as he started the job, Jaggi threw himself into the position, coordinating innumerable highly successful events for QPIRG and striving to make social and environmental justice organizing more welcoming for people of all backgrounds. He has, along with his co-workers Tasha and Ashley, pushed QPIRG Concordia into a position of greater prominence, visibility, and accessibility within Concordia University and beyond.
