The Quebec Public Interest Research Group at Concordia is a resource centre for student and community research and organizing. Alternative Resource Publications Coordinator (School Schmool and Poster Archive Project)

This position is partially funded by the Young Canada Works In Both Official Languages (YCW) program. Candidates must be eligible for YCW positions (full-time students intending to return to school in the fall, not working full-time elsewhere - see www.youngcanadaworks.ca for eligibility details).
PROJECT DESCRIPTIONS:
Please note that this position is to work on two separate projects.
Project #1: School Schmool: An Activist’s Guide to McGill, Concordia and Montreal
(In collaboration with QPIRG McGill)
School Schmool is an activist day planner for students at McGill, Concordia and for the Montreal community. It includes relevant and engaging articles, resources and practical tools for students and non-students alike to participate in social and environmental justice activism, as well as a useful day planner to organize busy academic and activist schedules. School Schmool is a long-time publication of QPIRG McGill. This year QPIRG Concordia is joining the project to officially expand the publication to both McGill and Concordia campuses.
Projet #2 : Poster Archive Resource
Over the years, QPIRG Concordia has maintained a diverse archive of posters, flyers and other outreach materials that have come through our office. These materials represent a broad scope of activism and community organizing at Concordia and in Montreal. This summer, QPIRG would like to organize these materials into a physical and online resource that will represent a history of QPIRG, and of community activism at Concordia and in Montreal. It will be a tool for students, activists and researchers.
Tasks include (for both projects):
* liaising with campus groups, QPIRG working groups and community groups to promote participation in the publication and expand resource database
* developing student volunteer base of writers and artists
* collecting, selecting and assembling content into publication format, using desktop-publishing and website-publishing software
* raising funds from campus departments for publication and distribution costs
* developing an outreach and distribution strategy on and around campus
* meeting QPIRG Concordia's mandate to create campus-community links at Concordia University
* liaising with QPIRG's staff and volunteer board of directors
* evaluating the program and submitting a final report for both projects to the board of directors
Required Skills:
* a demonstrated commitment to social and environmental change
* project and volunteer coordination experience
* writing and editing skills
* ability to work collaboratively and by consensus
* familiarity with desktop publishing applications (ex. InDesign, Photoshop)
* familiarity with website publishing applications (ex. Wordpress)
* artistic design and layout skills
* experience in fundraising
* knowledge of social and environmental justice organizations in Montreal
* fluency in English (oral and written)
* ability to work in French (oral)
Assets:
* familiarity with QPIRG Concordia and the Concordia campus
* fluency in French (written)

Summer Stipend Coordinator(s)

QPIRG's summer stipend is intended to provide an individual(s) with a budget/honorarium of $3,000 to work over the summer doing research or working on projects leading towards action and change on Campus and within the Montreal community. We encourage anyone interested to apply!
Successful applicants will demonstrate to the selection committee that:
- their project fits into QPIRG's mandate to promote social and environmental justice activism on Concordia campus and in the Montreal community
- the research or project will be useful, and implemented as an useful campus and community resource
- the applicant(s) has appropriate experience and can be reasonably expected to meet these goals.
We encourage projects that demonstrate a likelihood of ongoing and sustained activity beyond the final project.
Examples of past summer stipends at QPIRG Concordia include the development and implementation of:
- Vélo! Vélo!, a conference about and for bicycle collectives in the Greater Montreal Area (www.velovelo.ca) ;
- the Community-University Research Exchange (CURE) database, linking student research with grassroots groups throughout Montreal and beyond (www.qpirgconcordia.org/cure)
In your application, please include:
a) a proposal that outlines the objectives of your project, the needs it addresses, and how it fulfills the above criteria. (2 pages maximum)
b) a CV with two references
c) a project timeline that shows clear goals for the summer, as well as the follow-up action period
d) a budget of estimated expenses (and revenue, if any) for the project (i.e. honorarium, photocopies, travel costs, long distance phone calls, etc).
*Please keep in mind that the $3000 stipend is meant to cover both the estimated project expenses and an honorarium for the project coordinator(s).
Responsibilities of Summer Stipend recipients include:
- outlining with a QPIRG board or staff member the method and payment plan for the stipend (NOTE: a TOTAL of $3000 is given PER PROJECT)
- meeting with a QPIRG board or staff member to give updates on the progress of the project at least once per month throughout the duration of the summer
- giving at least three oral reports to the QPIRG board throughout the summer
- producing a final written report of the project that includes a summary of the completed project
- provide QPIRG with any materials that were produced
- present their project at QPIRG’s Annual General Meeting in October.
- acknowledge QPIRG Concordia’s contribution to the project on all publicity material
