Beyond Shorter Showers: An Introduction to Radical Ecology
Wednesday, November 18, 6:30pm
Coming from an eco-anarchist perspective, members of reclaim! will discuss a framework for analysis and action on ecological issues which is anti-racist, anti-capitalist, and grassroots direct action-oriented. Whose interests are served by the framework currently in vogue in the environmental movement? Who is left out by an approach to the crisis based on individualist notions of citizenship and consumerism? What are radicals, revolutionaries, and leftists missing when they sideline ecology? Can capitalism ever be sustainable? No matter what your experience is with these sorts of questions, if they interest you, come on out.
reclaim! is an anti-authoritarian, anti-capitalist collective of folks who love clean water and wild places. Based in Montréal, we want to be part of a social force for real sustainability and protection of the earth. We believe in greening radicals, radicalizing greens, and building a world without borders, states, or strip mines. You can reach us at reclaim-mtl@riseup.net.

Organizing sound at demonstrations and events: A hands-on workshop
Thursday, November 19, 6:30pm
This workshop will look at how to construct low-cost public address sound systems for demonstrations and actions, as well as for indoor events (concerts, conferences, benefits and parties). We will begin with an overview of the use of equipment and different possible sound scenarios for grassroots groups. One part of this workshop will together assemble a mobile sound system (both sound trucks and smaller-scale "sound dollys"). The latter part of this workshop will look in greater detail at the assembly of indoor PA systems for events. We will together brainstorm low-cost and low-budget alternatives. The workshop is hands-on, and intended for all local social justice organizers and activists who want to improve their sound skills to make their organizing more effective. No prior sound experience is necessary.
Facilitated by the Montreal Sound Team: The Sound Team provides sound services for Montreal-area community groups that cannot afford to pay professional rates. We build, maintain and operate P.A. systems for community events, rallies, conferences and performances. We also strive to disseminate and democratize the technical knowledge of audio production systems. Our purpose is to support people's grassroots initiatives and act in the interests of communities and their struggles for economic and political justice.
Space is limited; please confirm your participation in advance by e-mail at: workinggroups@qpirgconcordia.org

Racism (and anti-Racism) in Canada: From Colonialism to Border Legislation
Wednesday, November 25, 6:30pm
This workshop will explore the concept of race and racism and its roots in colonialism. We will look together at the last 100 years of racism within Canada, as well as contemporary examples of structural racism through police brutality, racial profiling and poverty. We will look critically at how racism continues to exist in a modern context, and skeptically at liberal and multicultural approaches to "anti-racism". We will together discuss how to effectively fight racism (linked to fighting against colonialism, capitalism and patriarchy) by engaging in everyday social struggles.
Presented and facilitated by Robyn Maynard; Robyn is an organizer and activist with Project X (www.theprojectx.ca) & No One Is Illegal-Montreal (http://nooneisillegal-montreal.blogspot.com).

Just Money: Social Justice and Grassroots Fundraising Tools for Building Community Based Movements
Thursday, November 26, 6-9pm
This extended workshop will invite participants to take a critical look at grassroots fundraising, focusing on how we as individuals can help to make resources available to sustain social change work in our communities. We'll look to each other and beyond for examples of grassroots fundraising success. The workshop will also present grassroots fundraising approaches that can successfully support work for social transformation. Drawing from the work of the folks at the Grassroots Institute for Fundraising Training (GIFT) (www.grassrootsfundraising.org), we will present one useful model that groups can use to make the money they need to do their work, consistent with social justice principles. We will also make time for critical reflection and discussion about other fundraising experiences, along the way.
Presented by Sarah Blumel and Alex Megelas of the Centre for Community Organizations (COCo)
